Commission a Custom Painting

Do you have a landscape that is particularly meaningful to you that you would like to have captured in a painting? Sometimes a photograph just can’t give you the feeling of being in a place. A painting is a great way to evoke the emotion and experience of being in the landscape. I can help! I have worked with many people to paint their particular place.

Or, do you like my style but paintings you love are not available? I have worked with many clients to make a custom painting in oil or egg tempera that will have the feel of a previous piece - or several pieces.

A commission will start with a conversation. I will discuss (often over email) what you are looking for. If it is your place you want to commission, I will ask for several photos of the place and ask what it is about the place you love. I don’t paint any one photo exactly and unless requested, the painting will be a feeling of the place, not the exact trees and fields. If it is a particular painting you are looking for, I will ask for the colors, shapes, and feel that appeal.

Pacific Northwest Commission

In this commission, the clients loved a painting they saw in one of my exhibitions, Envelope - unfortunately it was already sold. The painting reminded them of their summer home in Washington State. We met and had a great conversation about the Pacific Northwest landscape - what they love about the sky and land there, and what they loved about the painting they saw initially. The clients shared an album with many many photos and I set to work on a piece in egg tempera with the photographs and the painting Envelop in mind.

Chester County Commission

The client wanted a diptych to go on either side of their bookcase. They were looking for a painting that would feel like their stunning view. They shared an album of photos with me to give me a feel of the place they wanted to capture. The photos gave me a very good idea of the shapes, colors, depth, and impression of the view. My aim was not to paint something specifically from the photos, but rather to give a feeling of there.

Triptych Commission

A client saw my work at Calloway Fine Art & Consulting but couldn't find anything that was just right. So, they got in touch. We had a conversation over email...

"I have your painting, Brisk, on approval from Calloway right now. My husband and I love your paintings and are interested in having a triptych perhaps."

"I very much like 2021 Triptych and am wondering about perhaps having that with different hues."

I ask the client to identify the elements from specific paintings that they are most drawn to—I want to know the colors, shapes, and feel that appeal to them.

"We really love the color schemes of something like the 2021 Series -- especially #1 -- some green in there with the deep rusts and less or none of the yellows. Some blue sky would be great (the walls are a teal grasscloth wallpaper)."

Then I paint with this guidance in the desired size and format.

"Let's go with a triptych -- the sizing of the 2021 Triptych is very good for our wall space (72" x 35"). We like best the paintings that really evoke the mountain valley, such as Pale Mountain Diptych."
